Time to Increase Taxes

Connecticut is approaching a projected $365-million deficit this fiscal year, and staring at a $1.1-billion shortfall next year. Governor Dannel P. Malloy and the Democrat dominated legislature seem to be at a loss (no pun intended) as to how to stop our state budget from bleeding red ink.

Folks, what we need is nice big tax increase. No, the conservative capitalist isn't talking about adding to the  $1.5 billion wallop that Malloy has already socked us with.

I'm talking about the only kind of tax increase that will really improve the fiscal health of our anemic economy.

It is time to increase the amount of taxes being paid by increasing the number of people that are paying taxes.

It is time to increase the number of young people working and paying taxes.

It is time to increase the number of middle class people working and paying taxes.

And yes, it is time to increase the number of wealthy people working and paying taxes.

Governor Malloy is now being accused by some of shredding the safety net to try and balance the budget.

The truth is, there is only one way to painlessly shrink the safety net. You must decrease the number of people in the net. More people working means fewer people needing help which means dollars are freed up for other things like...oh I don't know, education. or one could really get wacky and actually lower taxes.

Yes, it is time to increase taxes by getting serious about encouraging and helping business to create more jobs for our neighbors.

Unfortunately, that type of tax increase seems to be beyond the understanding of those in charge, from the White House to the State House.

Time to Get Back to Work

Now that the election is over.
I am getting back to  delivering the message of Achievement, Independence, Education and Hard Work to as many members of this and the next generation as possible.

My goal is to visit at least 50 high schools throughout the stately Connecticut beginning in January 2013.

I believe that now more than ever, this is vital.

So, if you are a parent and would like this message brought to your local high school,  or If you own a business or know someone who owns a business that might wish to help bring this message to a school or other place, contact me here or via email wayne@winsley.com

There is much work to be done and we must begin now.

Veterans Day

This Veterans Day as we pause to thank my comrades in uniform past, present, and future, for their service to our nation, let us also remember WHY we don the uniform and take up arms in service to our nation.
From Paul Revere and the Sons of Liberty to today’s Seal Team Six, brave men and women have risked much and often sacrificed all to protect the inalienable rights bestowed upon all humans by their creator, Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

To this very day, the United States of America remains the brightest shining beacon of freedom in the world. We are one nation, under God with liberty and justice for all. We are also, thanks to our armed forces, a safe nation.

Just yesterday I pointed to news pictures of the rocket attack on Gaza in Israel and said to my family, “We are blessed that because of our armed forces, our citizens don’t have to worry about random missiles dropping out the sky on us. There are many people in the world who don’t have that luxury.”

While I can’t speak for every armed forces veteran and member, I know that I speak for myself and many others when I say, we put on the uniform because we love our country and what it stands for and we want to protect it from all enemies foreign and domestic.

As private citizens we also have a duty to protect and defend our nation and its principles.
That duty remains even if at the moment it doesn’t feel like the popular thing to do.

Cowards ask the question “is it expedient?” Expedience asks the question “is it the political thing to do?”  Vanity asks the question “is it popular?” but conscience asks the question “is it the right thing to do?”

“A Sad Day, Yes…”

“Today is a sad day for American conservatives.  Particularly, that’s the case for conservative republicans here in Connecticut where once again liberal democrats have run the table and swept every federal office in the state.  The natural tendency is to wring our hands and ask:  "where do we go from here?"

But here is the truth.

We played hard and left it all on the field.  Today, we are exhausted, our uniforms are torn and stained, and our psyche bruised and battered from the political thrashing that we have taken.  We have nothing to be ashamed of. The values and principles that built this great nation remain just as true and worth fighting for as they ever were.

Remember, the final whistle has not sounded on the future of our country.  We are still in the game.

The people have spoken and now the other team has the ball.  They must either advance it or be held accountable for their failure.  There can be no excuses, no rationalizations, and no evasions.

Like George Washington's army at Valley Forge we will persevere through this long continuing winter of liberal rule.  We will marshal our resources and hone our message.  When the politics of free stuff and deficit spending fails
(and it will), we must be ready to march in the spring of the next election.

Yes, today is a sad day for America, but the saddest day would be the day we stop fighting for America.

God bless you, your family, and may God Bless America.

DeLauro Shuns CT. Voters but Embraces Mass. Voters

U.S. Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass., and U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn. stroll down Main Street in the South End of Springfield, just hours after DeLauro snubbed voters in West Haven by refusing to appear for a debate and take voter questions. DeLauro drove up from New Haven to campaign for Democrat Elizabeth Warren.

Incumbent Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro apparently thinks her re-election is so “in the bag” that not only does she not have to lower herself to debating her opponent in front of third district voters, she doesn’t even have to campaign. In fact she can take time to go to neighboring states and campaign for other candidates.

That is exactly what she is doing. Less than twenty-four hours after refusing participate in a debate hosted by United Seniors for America at West Haven City Hall, incumbent DeLauro found time to stump for fellow Democrat Elizabeth Warren in Springfield Massachusetts.

Well, with a storm on the horizon, at least we know DeLauro is in the country this year if not the state, and hopefully she won’t try to phone in her response this time.

For twenty-two long years the citizens of the 3rd district have been saddled with an arrogant and imperious queen who believes that the people’s congressional seat is her throne and that she doesn’t have to be held accountable by her subjects unless she feels like it.

We can do better than that.

This election the citizens of the third district have a real choice.

Why is DeLauro Afraid to Debate in Front of Voters ?

The group, United Seniors for America is hosting a third district Congressional debate between Incumbent Rosa DeLauro and challenger Wayne Winsley at West Haven City Hall, Thursday October 25th at 6:30pm.

All media and citizens are urged to attend

The debate will be moderated by the editors of two area newspapers, The West Haven Voice and Hamden Journal. Audience members will be able to submit questions as well via index cards.

Incumbent DeLauro has issued a statement refusing to attend this debate, saying that two public forums where no debating between candidates are allowed and the single, pre-recorded, 25 minute debate which aired on Face the State on October 21st are enough for the voters of the third district.

I strongly disagree.

I - Wayne Winsley am committed to attending and standing before the voters and taking all questions.

Whether incumbent DeLauro feels your questions are worth hearing and answering is up to her.

I for one, urge her to attend. The voters deserve no less.

As your next representative, I - Wayne Winsley - will work hard to serve the citizens of the Third Congressional with forthrightness, honor, and integrity.

This Campaign is Different

These girls decided totally on their own to promote Wayne Winsley for Congress as cars passed by on RT 313 in Seymour. They spent over an hour shouting 'Honk for Wayne' and received about 40 honks. They even added a little tic mark on one of the signs each time a driver honked or waved. They had great fun supporting Wayne.

There are candidates out there with millions of dollars at their disposal and a large roster of well-paid staff members. Wayne Winsley doesn’t have any of that.

There are candidates out there that have years of experience as elected officials and are seasoned campaigners that have been around the political block several times.

Wayne Winsley is a political novice who has spent most of his working life behind a microphone in radio stations across the state.

Wayne Winsley should have no shot at all against a 22 year incumbent in a district where Republican candidates have been persona non grata for years.

Yet, for some reason, this campaign is different. My message of moving people from food stamps to full time employment and helping businesses small and large to grow and create jobs for more of our neighbors is resonating and We the People are responding.

In Seymour, the group of wonderful little girls shown above, chose me over all of the other candidates and decided on their own, in the middle of their Sunday afternoon, to go outside and spend time encouraging drivers to “Honk for Wayne”. For over an hour they turned “We the People” into “WEE the People”.
No other candidate in the state is inspiring this kind of enthusiasm.

This homeowners said, "I'll vote for you, and put your sign right there next to my Obam sign".

In the Democrat stronghold of New Haven there is something different happening that is inspiring voters to cross party lines, many for the first time, and to embrace a new direction even if it means splitting their ticket.

What is different about this campaign is that the PEOPLE of Connecticut’s third congressional district are saying, “We don’t care that the conventional wisdom say that this is unwinnable. We don’t care that the political experts have written us off as hopeless. There is one guy who is standing up and offering us a real alternative and we are listening and we are responding.

This is why the 3rd District is not just winnable, it is VERY Winnable!

And by the way, if you weren’t sure, this is what
We ALL Win with Winsley
looks like!

DeLauro Shows Her True Colors During Debate

NAUGATUCK, CONN – October21: Wayne Winsley, committed candidate to represent all of the citizens of CT’s 3rd Congressional District, today released the following statement.

During the debate televised on Face the State, incumbent DeLauro says
“My opponent doesn’t understand how congress works”.

When asked why she voted to recognize two tablespoons  of tomato paste as equal to a serving of fruits or vegetables for our school children even though she knows the concept is ridiculous and absurd.

On Nov. 22nd 2011 Incumbent DeLauro is quoted in the New Haven Independent as saying,

"Considering pizza a vegatable and considering it paired with a side of french Fries a healthy meal for children is absurd."

Not only did DeLauro vote for the measure, she admits during the debate that she was actually the Chair of the committee that brought it to the floor. Her excuse was that the bill also contained money for food stamps and WIC.
Apparently, the logic is that the parents getting the food stamps and WIC should vote for the incumbent and ignore the fact that she totally threw their children under the bus.

While I haven’t been in congress for half my life, I understand enough to know that unlike incumbent DeLauro, I will have the courage and  integrity to stand up and do the right thing for ALL of the people, not just the ones I think will  vote  for me.

We also learned that the incumbent claims to have actually read the Affordable Care Act before proudly voting for it.

Yet, she seemed to have no clue that part of the new law will discourage or even discontinue the PSA prostate cancer screening for men under age 50 because of a D rating by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF).

That screening by the way is what saved my life a year ago. I had aggressive prostate cancer and didn’t know it.

Since prostate cancer is both more common and more aggressive in African America men, I asked the incumbent what she would say to all those young men, especially all of those young black men like me who are now potentially at greater risk of death because of the health care act she so proudly voted for.

DeLauro literally says that these dead men walking should still vote for her.

This is the representation that the third district has had for a generation.

We can do better. It is time for new and effective representation for all of the people of the third district. Republicans, Democrats, and Unaffiliated we all deserve better.

As your next representative, I - Wayne Winsley - will work hard to serve the citizens of the Third Congressional with forthrightness, honor, and integrity.

Put The People First: Suspend All Gas Taxes Now

NAUGATUCK, CONN – September 21: Wayne Winsley, committed to restore the Public Trust as the people’s next   3rd U.S. Congressional District representative, today released the following statement:

The price of gasoline across the country is way too high; and, the ‘Price of Gas in Connecticut’ is outrageously high.  That’s because Incumbents in both the Congress and CT State Government are out of touch with the people.

Again, I call on every Incumbent/Challenger for the US Congress as well as the CT State Legislature to join me in Suspending the Federal Gas Tax and all CT State Gas Taxes effective October 1, 2012.

We must not wait for January.  In fact, we must take immediate action right now ‘for the people’.
All CT residents will ‘Save $.67 CENTS PER GALLON’ at the pump beginning October 1st... if, both Incumbents and Challengers are willing to ‘Put The People First’.

(The $.67 CENTS PER GALLON of Gas Taxes includes the Federal Government Gas Tax of ‘18.4 cents per gallon as well as the Connecticut State Government Gas Taxes which are ‘48.9 cents per gallon.)

It’s time:  Each current CT Federal Incumbent (Blumenthal, Lieberman, Courtney, DeLauro, Himes, Larson and Murphy) publicly call for - and have Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid publicly call for- President Obama to call Congress back immediately to pass federal legislation suspending the Federal Gas Tax placed on the people of the 50 states; and,

It’s time:  Governor Malloy call the Connecticut General Assembly into Special ‘One-Day’ Session to pass legislation suspending all State Government Gas Taxes placed on the people purchasing gasoline at the pump; and,

It’s time:  All the people save money at the gas pump including --- those who commute to jobs -- those who drive to job interviews -- those in business with vehicles on the road -- those in business who could add new jobs --- and those struggling to purchase food for their family. The immediate suspension of all gas taxes will help all the people.

It’s time:  Put the People First

Suspend Gas Taxes Now

NAUGATUCK, CONN – September 12: Wayne Winsley, committed to effectively represent all the people of Connecticut’s 3rd U.S. Congressional District and to restore the Public Trust, today released the following statement:
“Whether a person has a full-time job that they must commute to; or, a person is out of work but actively seeking a job; or, commuting to a part-time job; or, commuting to school; or, going to the grocery store to purchase food for their family – we need gasoline in the tank.  That’s the reality.

Here’s another part of our reality: Putting gas in the tank costs money’.  In Connecticut, gasoline costs are way too high.
Why is every one of us paying excessively high ‘Gas Prices at the Pump here in Connecticut?  Here are some facts:

o    The fact is every gallon of gas costs much more today than it did when President Obama took office.
o    The fact that Mr. Obama blocks expanded drilling is another.
o    The dollar’s devaluation internationally is another.
o    The dollar’s decreasing purchasing power domestically is yet another.

Each of these facts-among others-are part of the ‘per gallon cost’ problem each of us faces every time ‘at the pump’.

“But, an overriding factor is the ineffective representation by incumbents among the CT Delegation to Washington  - as well as State Legislative majority in Hartford, who persistently have put their own ‘tax collecting interests’ and ongoing ‘politics-as-usual’ ahead of all of the people’s interests.  Such practices cannot be permitted to continue.”

“It’s Time to Change.  It’s Time to Lead.  It’s Time to Act.  It’s Time to Suspend Gas Taxes!”
Today, I call on every incumbent/challenger for the US Congress to join me in Suspending the Federal Gas Tax.

I am calling for a full suspension of the $18.4 cents per gallon Federal Gas Tax effective October 1, 2012.

We do not need to wait for January.  In fact, we must not wait. We must take action now ‘for the people’.
Further, in the spirit of Restoring America’s Promise, I cordially invite every current Federal Incumbent/Challenger to join me; and, I am extending my hand to each current CT Federal Incumbent (Blumenthal, Lieberman, Courtney, DeLauro, Himes, Larson and Murphy) as well as each CT Federal Challenger (Decker, Estey, Formica, McMahon, Obsitnick, Rorabach, among others).

In addition, I call on every incumbent/challenger for the State Legislature to join me in Suspending the CT State Gas Tax. I am calling for a full suspension of the $48.6 cents per gallon CT State Gas Tax effective October 1, 2012.
We do not need to wait for the next scheduled session. Again, we must take action now ‘to do the people’s work’.
With all respect to, and expectation of, our Governor, a prompt call of the CT General Assembly into special session this month is both warranted and needed.

Further, in the spirit of Restoring America’s Promise in Connecticut, I urge all Incumbent leaders of both the majority and minority parties in the CT General Assembly to include each of their respective Challengers in any and all pre-special session General Assembly discussions.  Of course, all such formal and informal gatherings as well as the Special Session should be televised live on CTN.
